I really enjoyed the DVD.He is a very talented guitarist and provides great information in a format that is easy to follow.I appreciate the individual breakdown of the segments he plays throughout his extended example piece.I makes it easier to digest the material and see how the individual licks incorporate in the "Big Picture" of developing solos. The split screen of both hand's activity is always a blessing for this type of instruction video.Highly recomended.

Beginning Electric Slide Guitar Review

Beginning Electric Slide Guitar

This was my first exposure to slide guitar instruction other than Youtube. I found it helpful, but only for getting started. Because I've been playing guitar for a while, I had hoped for something that would provide more material to play. With this dvd, you learn the basic mechanics of slide including vibrato, a few scales, and a few licks. A lot of info that most more advanced players won't need or want, including how to read notes and tab. You aren't going to get much more than the basics. If you are just want to get started, this will help. If you are hoping to start playing blues slide or something else, look elsewhere.

I purchased this product after recently learning to play the guitar. I found the teaching to play these songs very simple and easy to understand. However, you must know your chords before buying this DVD as they do not teach you how to play the chord, but instead which chords to play to make up the song. I only learnt the first two songs...

How to Play the Music of Stevie Wonder - Arrangements for Solo Fingerstyle Guitar Taught by Adam Rafferty Review

How to Play the Music of Stevie Wonder - Arrangements for Solo Fingerstyle Guitar Taught by Adam Rafferty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
How to Play the Music of Stevie Wonder by Adam Rafferty is a fantastic new release aimed at fingerstyle guitarists wanting to hone their chops and add some R&B and funk to their repertoire with arrangements of the Stevie Wonder hits "Superstition", "I Wish", "Overjoyed", and "Sir Duke."

The DVD lasts just under two hours and Adam spends between 20 to 30 minutes teaching each arrangement. The video begins with a short introductory segment in which Adam encourages guitarists not to be intimidated or frustrated with the complex material presented in the video. He then briefly talks about what he calls "learning how to learn" and describes four specific stages of the learning process that students will encounter while working through the pieces. Adam adds that he continues to practice these pieces often and that he too is still fine tuning his performances!

The remainder of the video takes a no-nonsense approach. Each of the four songs is shown being performed in it's entirety and is then deconstructed and analyzed in the following segment. During the instruction segments the video consistently shows a close up of Adam's left hand and an smaller inset of his right hand so guitarists can closely study either hand. Adam is comfortable in front of the camera and is obviously used to breaking down information into short, easily understood phrases. There is enough detail given to the specialized guitar techniques used that you can't misinterpret how to recreate them. Once enough explanation has been given, short sections of the tune are demonstrated at a slow enough tempo that intermediate-level players should be able to start playing along with only a little practice. Adam ends most instructional segments with some performance notes and often points out places where he has slightly changed elements of the original songs in order to make them groove harder and sound more at home on the guitar. [...]

The 30-page booklet that accompanies the DVD contains very detailed scores in standard notation and tablature. Left-hand fingerings are included for every note and occasional right-hand fingerings are indicated as well. Often there are notes from Adam in the music suggesting alternate fingerings or describing guitar techniques that printed notation can't clearly show. My only gripe about the booklet is that it's a bit small. The booklet is made from standard 8.5 x 11 paper folded in half like a church bulletin. It's certainly not any worse than what is included with most instructional DVDs but I may take the booklet to Kinko's and enlarge each page to make it easier on my 39-year-old eyes.

Although the arrangements are quite complex and will take even an experienced player some time to master, I'm sure anyone wanting to better understand how to arrange for solo fingerstyle guitar would benefit from watching the DVD. Adam either directly or indirectly addresses a myriad of concepts and techniques that guitarists use when creating solo arrangements. Some of these include: choosing a key signature, isolating melody and bass lines, understanding syncopation, cross-string scales, right-hand-slaps, hammer-ons form nowhere, hinge barres, and more.

I totally enjoyed watching and working with this DVD. Adam's friendly vibe and attention to detail ensure that any guitarist willing to spend time practicing the material will be able to master the four songs presented.

Seems to me I was sent a bootleg copy of this product.VERY disappointed because this was a Christmas present for my fiance who is a die-hard fan of Eddie Van Halen. The DVD didn't look anything like the picture and it was sent in a clear plastic case, nothing else. You can't hear the instructor because the same lick from "You Really Got Me" keeps playing throughout the intro. You can't select anything from the menu.Don't waste your money.

Guitar Method: The Greatest Bass Riffs of All Time! Review

Guitar Method: The Greatest Bass Riffs of All Time

I have been playing bass since 2003 and am one of the few female bassists who plays a six-string bass.My husband bought me the VHS version of this video way back when, before it was available on DVD, and I really enjoy it.However, I have some unique abilities and specific teaching needs which make it more valuable to me than perhaps other bassists.First, although I can read music, I play bass primarily by ear.As the other reviewer points out, you cannot really see the instructor's hands very well. What I like about the video, though, is that the bass riffs are audibly prominent enough for me to figure out by ear what he's playing. In addition, he plays great recognizable bass riffs from "Lady Madonna," "Barracuda," "Back in the Saddle," "Sledgehammer," and "Roundabout," among others. In addition, because I am a woman, I have a unique set of "groupies" who follow me around in the hopes I will screw up, because everyone knows women cannot play bass, right? So I learned these riffs by ear for the pure shock value.Learning these riffs gave me the confidence early in my bass-playing career to silence most of the people who laughed at me and told me I'd never be able to play bass. This video motivated me to get good at bass guitar.
